Aftercare
After getting your piercing done, we will guide you step by step so that it heals well. We will explain how to clean it, what products to use and what to avoid during the first days.
How should I clean my piercing?
Wash your hands before touching it. Clean the area twice a day with sterile saline solution (or saline solution) and leave for a few minutes, then dry with gauze or disposable paper, without rubbing.
Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, betadine and antibiotic creams without indication: they irritate and delay healing. Do not turn or move the jewel “so that it does not stick”.
How long does it take for a piercing to heal?
It depends a lot on the area and your care. As a general guideline:
- Lobe: 6-8 weeks
- Cartilage (helix/tragus): 3-9 months
- Nose: 2-4 months
- Navel: 6-12 months
- Nipple: 6-12 months
- Oral (tongue/lip): 4-8 weeks (although it stabilizes later)
Note: just because it “does not hurt” does not mean that it is healed inside; sometimes it looks fine and is still healing.
When can I exchange my jewelry?
Ideally, do not change it until it is completely healed. Changing it before that often causes irritation, bleeding or lumps.
As a quick guide:
- Lobe: from 6-8 weeks (if perfect)
- Nose: 2-3 months minimum
- Cartilage: 6 months minimum (sometimes more)
- Nipple/nipple: best to wait 9-12 months
If you need to change it sooner due to discomfort, size or reaction, it is safest to have your piercer do it.
Is it normal for it to become swollen or uncomfortable?
Yes, for the first few days it is normal to notice swelling, mild redness, tenderness and some warmth. There may also be a slight clear/yellowish crusty discharge (lymph).
It is not normal (or requires revision) if it appears:
- Growing pain, spreading redness
- Thick pus (green/strong yellow) and foul odor
- Fever, chills
- Jewel “sinks” due to inflammation or skin looks very tight
- Lump that grows and does not improve in 1-2 weeks
Can I sleep or play sports with the piercing just done?
Sleep: yes, but try not to put pressure on the piercing (especially ear and face). A travel pillow (donut type) is great for the ear or sleep on the opposite side.
Sport: depends on the type.
- Gentle activity: usually 2-3 days, if not rubbing or sweating excessively.
- Contact sports, swimming pool, sea and spa: best avoided for at least 2-4 weeks (or as indicated by your piercer), because they increase the risk of shock and infection.
If you sweat a lot, clean with serum at the end and dry well.
Do you recommend any care products?
Yes: the safest and most sufficient is usually sterile saline solution in single-dose or saline spray for piercing. Optional: sterile compresses/drying gauze.
Avoid:
- Alcohol, chlorhexidine daily, betadine, hydrogen peroxide, etc.
- Miracle” ointments, essential oils, antibiotic creams without prescription
- Strong soaps or exfoliants on the area
Extra useful: if irritation occurs, apply warm compresses with serum for 5-10 minutes and reduce the “touching”.
